I think he looks great, and your groomer did an excellent job. Shaving is much more humane than working out each mat when there are many. I would never take a badly matted dog to the groomer. All mats should be removed before you go. I also suggest that you follow your brushing with a combing session to ensure all mats are removed, use the comb flat against the skin. Cowboy Magic Detangler works on hard to remove mats, and use it on dry hair, once wet, mats are almost impossible to remove, and shaving is the only option. Some people have also reported good results with cornstarch, again, use it before the bath, not after.
