I don't think we should compare breeding dogs with humans; we don't "breed" for humans in that way, and nature has nothing to do with it, breeders choose what traits to breed for. At one time, most people just owned mutts a little of this and a little of that, and there is nothing wrong with this, many were beautiful healthy dogs. But what if you wanted a dog just like your neighbors dog, what then? Purebred breeding came about because certain dogs were good at certain tasks. Each breed then developed a standard, or a recipe on what a perfect example of the breed should look like, and it's temperament. If a breeder never breeds to standard, it wouldn't take that many generations before a yorkie wouldn't process any of the qualities that set the yorkie apart from other breeds. In other words, it would eventually look just like a mutt, it might have the short hair of the Chihuahua, the curly hair of a poodle, the droopy ears of the Maltese, but it would still be pure bred. Purebred only means that the parents were purebred; it doesn't mean that the parents actually were a good representative of the breed. If you really familiarize yourself with standard, you will understand that the yorkie standard is very difficult to obtain, but it's an extraordinary dog to behold. Even those that don't meet standard are really cute, but until every breeder can easily obtain standard and can also produce a healthy puppy, I say we avoid producing for more variety. The whole idea of purebreds is less variety, and one good example should very much look and be like another good example. If you want more variety, you could go for a different breed, lots of variety there. No matter what the breed, I always encourage buyers to support those breeders who understand the importance of breeding to standard.
