Congratulations, hle_625! It sounds like you've found something that works very well with your dog. And, I think you are spot-on with only making the time-out last for 1 minute. Beyond that, they don't remember what they did wrong.

A loud "ouch" or clapping your hands works for many small dogs. For a few, though, they interpret those things as playing on your part. If that's the case, you are probably better off saying "NO!" while immediately putting her down and walking away from her while avoiding eye contact. Again, 1 minute is probably long enough. If that doesn't work, your brief time-out is great!
