I am a landlord also, and if this happened at my rental, I don't know what I would do. This is just so horrible. I know the landlord is not responsible even though it's their property so I'm sure you can't have them do anything for you. It's always between the renter and whomever is involved. I would definitely make certain the landlord is aware of this. I have a million dollar liability policy on my rental, not sure what it covers, but maybe you could see if they have some type of coverage that would help pay for your expenses. It didn't happen at the rental so then again that's an issue. Those people need to put that dog to rest. That animal is dangerous! Could have been someones child.
Always keep dear Minnie in your thoughts and remember the good times you had with her. I can't express how sad I feel for you.

But maybe the landlord would choose not to continue to rent to people who knowingly keep vicious animals on the property (even if they are relatives), and I bet the OP would be happier to see them move on than anything. I'm sure the other neighbors would too, and with all the media attention now, I hope the pressure will get them to move on. Has to be hard with them living next door.
Still such a sad sad situation.
