YT is a place for learning and sharing, but sometimes we newbies get slammed or lectured instead of instruction. It makes us not want to ask or share.
I think the OP was excited about her baby's new formal name, and now she is getting her bubble burst. |
I have tried to share this information before with her in another thread, but maybe she disagrees, or maybe I wasn't blunt enough. I'm sorry if my post bothered you, I do feel so strongly about this. The OP has said on other threads that she considers the AKC "snob breeders", and I think others might think this too, and I just want to set the record straight on what registries are really about. At one time, when there was only one registry, the AKC, having a registered dog was considered a status symbol, but those days are long gone, and the expense of owning a dog, is no longer in the buying of the dog, but the upkeep. Dog prices are dropping, but vet prices are rising, and supporting poor breeders can end up costing you more than buying a premier show dog. If you have read many threads though, you will know that people can't always afford to have the necessary treatment for their ill-bred dogs, and these dogs are then rehomed, or worse, PTS. Some members say, "It's just cheaper to buy a new dog," when pup needs LP surgery. I hate this throwaway attitude some people have toward dogs. I also hate the fact that many people ignore the puppy mill situations, and refuse to believe there's a serious problem. I encourage pet owners to support the AKC, if their dogs are eligible, because while it's not perfect, they are trying to get rid of poor breeders, but the breeders who have be banned from the AKC have just opened up their own registries, and uniformed buyers don't always understand the differences.
I do understand that the OP is very excited about her puppy, and as time goes on, she will love her more and more, but I hope this love also grows for not just her dog, but for the Yorkie breed in general, and eventually all dogs. When we start loving all dogs like we do our own dogs, we will do everything in our power to get rid of puppy mills, and we will strongly encourage other people not to support mill breeders or mill registries, even though we take the risk of offending someone. I never ever want to imply that a person should feel that there dog is "less" because he's not registered with the AKC, and if someone wants bragging rights they should find a dog through a rescue and you will have my utmost respect. If you don't wish to go to a rescue, I hope you can at least see the conditions in which your puppy's parents are being raised, and only support those breeders and registries that you know are doing right by the breed. There is a huge difference in registries, but if too much is said; people think you are talking about their dogs personally, and not the breeders.
