When I took him to his first vet check up, that's what I had the vet check out. He said he didn't have any loose knee caps.

And that's what I didn't want to do was to worry you, I'm sorry. Grade 1 doesn't need surgery. As I said, some dogs do well with phy therapy and supplements. Some dogs may have grade 2 and never need surgery. And as you said, you think that he might have gotten bit by something. I would try not to worry until you take him in to see a vet. I know, easy to say, but don't look for trouble before you have too. If your vet said that he didn't have loose knee caps then that is a good start. Sometimes a dog might injure himself. It could be a some time thing and it may never happen again. Hot Rod had one incident when we first got him at 4 mos and didn't really have any issues until 1 1/2 years old. My advice is to get him checked out and then ask tons of questions and weigh your options. Information and knowlegde is the best thing.
