| Luxating Patella???? I think my Kingston might have LP. Just this week I noticed when we went on our walks that he was carrying his right hind leg. The thing is, he doesn't always carry it. He would run/walk normally, then all of a sudden he would carry his hind leg again. It's on and off. I'm not sure if it is LP, or if he might have just sprained his leg. Come to think of it, I remember him going on the grass and jumping back as if something had bit him. I'm thinking maybe a bug bit him and that's why he's carrying his hind leg? I don't know what to think. I just hope it's nothing serious. I plan on having him checked, but in the meantime, can anyone share their thoughts? Thank you.

| I don't want to get you worried or anything, but that is what Hot Rod started doing. We didn't know that anything was wrong like that as we'd just taken him for his checkup in November. His surgery was March 31st. He went from a grade 1 to a grade in that time. He would not want to walk, he'd just stop, sometimes he'd sit down in the middle of the street. You may or many not need to have surgery but it is best to get it checked out. He may be able to have physical therapy to help. I think it is best for be informed. Make sure that if and when you have surgery that your surgeon knows what he is doing. Ask how many surgeries of this nature that he's done and if you do not feel comfortable, please find one that you do feel comfortable with. If you need more info please feel free to pm me. Hugs to you and your little one.

When I took him to his first vet check up, that's what I had the vet check out. He said he didn't have any loose knee caps. Is this something that can develop over time? I can't help but worry now...

| my dd is grade 4 lp in back both legs -- her patellas are permanently out and do not move and she is fine. 80% of dogs do not need the surgery - it is only when they are in pain and always lifting the leg that you want to do the surgery -- go see a board certified orthopedic and have him checked out and then you may want to start him on cosequin as many with lp have said that works great -- I don't supplement as dd does not hold her legs up -- she was diagnosed in one leg as a baby and then she jumped off doggie stairs and hurt her acl but we rested her for 5 months and she is back to normal now. No more doggie stairs, no more playing frisbee, no jumping on and off furniture - we are very careful with her. If they have lp they are very susceptible to acl tears and ruptures. DD had digital xrays on both back legs and confirmed the lp are permanently out and the vet could not move them at all - she has compensated with her front two legs nicely and does well. I would not rush to surgery but i would rest the leg if lifting and be cautious as to not further injur acl or leg. Last edited by dwerten; 08-29-2009 at 02:17 PM. |
