also, it's not out of spite that he pees everywhere when gated, he wants to be near you, if you teach him that his crate is positive and his own little place to be, and stay right there beside him while he's in it, he'll eventually catch on that it's not punishment, not to be scared, or to whine/pee the crate/carrier is a SMALL space, just enough to turn around, lie down, stand up, if it's too big he'll feel more scared than if he's in a secure, small place with a blanket for comfort and a toy to cuddle with.
give it a try maybe?? and remember he's a baby, it's never out of spite a dog does something...they don't know what spite is really, they're just either anxious or scared, or something just excited when they release their bladder like that...teach him it's a good place to be, it's not punishment and it's not keeping him away from you because you are right there with him.
