Any dog, regardless of registry is only as good as the breeder that produced it. You can get dishonest, unethical breeders regardless of which registry you are using. Don't ever assume that the registry being used is an indication of the quality of the dog or the ethics of the breeder.
In regards to the OP, you were in a pet store...mistake number one. (I know, you were looking, not buying.) Just saying, dogs in pet stores are largely supplied by mills, so nothing there should come as a big surprise.
