I would not tolerate growling of any sort for whatever reason. What i would do next time he growls while your holding him or he's sitting on you is to immediately tell him no and put him on the floor, then you walk away. Whether he's guarding you or just being a bully its NOT cute and its not something that should be tolerated. If you just continue to hold him while he's doing that bad behavior then he's being rewarded. If you take away the object (you in this case) that he is guarding then his game becomes no fun any more.
