I think dogs do well with companions. However, you do have to be cautious when they are not supervised. A local woman here had her male who was very tiny (under 2lbs full grown) kenneled with a female. When she got home from work the female had killed the male. I would never pen up two dogs together after seeing what happened to that one tiny male. You could put them close to each other so they can see/smell and know that they are not alone.
