I read what I could find, made her a box for whelping and was with her, on the phone with my vet, when her puppies were born. She only had 2. After reading all that could have gone wrong, I was very lucky we had no problems. But, we never wanted to go thru that again! We did not buy them to breed, so the vet recommended getting the male neutered first to give her body time to recover. As soon as possible, I had her spayed. My husband did not want me to since I had neutered Harley, but what if she got lost or stolen? She had 3 litters and was just 2 years old! I could not take the chance she would have to go thru that again. No, breeding is not for everybody, I would never do it again.
Ignorance is bliss! About 10 years ago, my yorkie had two pups. I had to take her to the vet to help. No c-section that time. I didn't do my research then, so no heat lamp, no weighing the pups every day, etc. The puppies turned out fine! Healthy, etc. But now that I know .....WOW! The stress is crazy! I literally hand feed Maggie every meal to make sure she eats and produces milk for the babies. I give her an egg a day (per Mary), her vitamin, etc.
I had to go back to work today. However, I left my 18 year old daughter home to watch and care for Maggie. You know you would think I gave birth! I can't wait to get home. I almost have separation anxiety!! No LOL to it!!
