We travel 3-4 times per year for at least a week at a time. I use professional pet sitters who stay overnight and check in with them via email daily. We always miss them but I can't say that they miss us all that much! They are happy and content in their own home when we are away. They sleep in their bed, with the sitter, and their routine is not disturbed. We leave new toys for them to be given to them in the middle of the trip - who doesnt love presents - and some favorite treats. I ask the sitters to spend 5 minutes or so asking the dogs to sit, lay down, shake hands, etc to keep them mentally stimulated. With strict instructions, lots of thought and discussion about "what ifs" and good communication, I am able to enjoy my trips without feeling nervous about leaving them.
