And this is an abstract from another article:
"Sadly enough, they've become novelty items," says Kay-Lynette Roca, executive director of Safe Harbor. "I could go in my shelter right now and put names on them from Katrina — like Biloxi the cat or Slidell the dog — and clean my shelter out. But I would never do that. I won't lie."
Some are trying to cherry-pick their pets, asking whether any little Yorkies were found, or any long-haired dogs. "It gets irritating to us," Roca says. "It's like they're shopping at Saks."
One woman wanting to adopt a Katrina animal sent a $50 donation along with a special request: The pet must be willing to fly. "We have a Lear jet," the woman explained.
