My Hamish is older, but not sick, and our pup gives him HELL! I keep waiting for Hamish to snap at him, show him who is "top of the heap", but Fergus was so little I think Hamish just wants to be left alone.
They are working it out, finally, but as much as I hate to say it, I think the added strain of a puppy on your baby may be a bit much. Even if he was just "being a puppy" thats a lot of jumping, running, playing, pestering, trying to roughhouse for an older, sick dog.
Good luck. Tell the ex thanks but no thanks, and you are under NO obligation to find a new home. Tell him he should never have committed to it without talking to you.
