I can see it both ways. It might perk Buddy up. I don't think he would feel betrayed as long as your attention to him does not change to less. It might with having to train a new pup. I don't know. When I brought Niyah home, Apple did not feel betrayed. She is the same dog as before. Granted she is not sick. Also something to remember that a sick animal sometimes don't want to be bothered. My Persian cat had cancer and died last year. He would come up to me to be petted but then when he had enough, he would go off on his own and not be bothered. Especially when pain is involved.
