I free feed both my English setter and my yorkie. They are both great weights. They know when they need to eat and they don't over eat because they know ther will always be food when they want it. So they don't learn that they have to eat when the food is there, because when they are hungry it might not be there.
My sister inlaws dog almost died because he was only eat two times a day, so he learned to eat up when it came. Then when my mother and father in law where watching him he got into their dog's food and eat the whole bag. He spend the night at the vet with lots of treatment. I am a strong believer that this is true with child too. They learn to eat what they need and not to over eat.
