Advice on getting yorkie to gain weight? I just adopted a 2 y/o boy yesterday and he is very very skinny. He is taller and longer than my Bella who weighs 6 lbs and he weighs 3.2 lbs. The previous owner told me he has just always been really skinny and he was free-fed before. He ate boiled chicken breast like there was no tomorrow when we first got off the plane yesterday. Then he's had dog food last night and this morning. He eats hungrily at his dog food for a little bit but does not finish it all (just 1/4 cup this morning- mixed wellness small bites and Innova Evo with a bit of alascan salmon oil and a tiny sprinkle of shredded cheddar cheese). He had a vet check this past Monday with the previous owner and they faxed me the records- he is heartworm negative, is now up to date on shots, they said he is healthy, and he is pottying normally #1 and #2. I am taking him to my vet to get checked out on this coming Monday and will get a full blood panel. I know I haven't even given this time to see if he will put on weight yet, but it makes me so sad to see him so skinny and feel all his bones. I don't want to overwhelm him with food and make him sick, but I just can't wait to have him at a healthier weight. Is it possible that a dog could be this skinny and be healthy? He acts playful and sweet as can be - but he's so boney and skinny!!!
Does anyone have advice on how to best to go from here? Should I be feeding him anything exra- I don't want to feed him too much human food so that he become picky about the dog food.
Thanks in advance for any advice |
