This is an old-timey idea...but I'm sure someone will come along and elucidate, if it's a bad one. Over the years, any time I wanted my dogs to leave something alone...I sprayed it with Bitter Apple. It tastes really bad, so they'd not lick or bite whatever it was on.
It's been a few years since I've needed or used it...but maybe it could help? Spraying (or wiping) it on the sheath should be enough to keep him away from his little goodie, IMO.
