That is no problem. To repair, you go ahead and cut through if it is only partial anyway. You just scrape the plastic/rubber off about an inch or two on each side. Separate the wires and then twist them back together with the appropriate ones. If they are all just plain copper, just twist them together, one around the other for a length of maybe 1/4 - 1/2 inch. If the wire is full of lots of little copper wires, just use it like one and twist together with the bunch from the other end. Then get out the electrical tape. Wrap it extra well, ensuring all wires are at least triple coated with the tape. Then it will work. May not look as pretty, but will work just fine. (If you want the joint to be extra strong, you can use one of those little solder guns to just barely melt the wires together. This is really not necessary but we have one of those little pen like solder guns that is pretty handy.) I have done this many times myself over the years -- it really is simple as can be.
