You do not need papers unless you are going to breed, but it is also nice because you get to see your pup's family line and where they come from. It isn't expensive to get your dog registered and I personally found it worthwhile. She is also at a healthy weight. You may want to consider purchasing NutriCal though because she is so small. Trust me it gives you much peace of mind having it.
