Personally, I call the vet office and "chit chat" with the office personnel. If they are nice AND if the vet has good recommendations from reliable sources, I make an appointment to "interview" the vet. I usually do not take my baby with me..... vet places are full of sick animals and I try not to expose my babies unless absolutely necessary.
While at the office, I would really look close to see how clean it is and how clean it smells. I would also watch how the vet techs handle the patients.
