Awwww. Poor you that sound really bad... I would of be so worry too if the kennel didn't returned my calls for 3 days! That and, the disgusting condition of the place and dogs, It really is unacceptable.

You should contact your local animal protection association to complain. You probably aren't the only one that got a bad experience there.

I always ask to visit the kennel so I can see if it is clean. Don't expect to found one that is smelling like roses and that is perfectly clean, a kennel is a kennel and dogs constantly have accidents.

I found that the hardest part is to found a place with a staff that really love animals...

Don't worry about the dog not eating much, they get stress out from the new environment and sometime loose appetite.

Since you only have one dog, I would recommend you to found a pet sitter that will keep your dog in is home.Make sure to Ask for reference and call them.
