Becky, I don't want to worry you but with liver shunt the ammonia will slowly build up in the dog's system and make their bodies toxic. When this happens the dog will display symptoms like you puppy did. The dog will quit eating for awhile and the ammonia levels will go down and the dog will appear normal again. Then the cycle can start all over again. Also when dogs with compromised livers get constipated and don't have regular bowel movements that also makes the ammonia levels build up faster. I pray that your girl does not have liver problems but I recommend you watch her closely. If she has another episode then I recommend you immediately put her on a low protein diet designed for liver compromised dogs until you can get the bile acid test done. I would also look for a vet that can do the test at a much cheaper price. I am praying your baby makes a speedy recovery.
