I use kibble, (doesn't stick to teeth as much) Petzlife spray (soften tartar), and Merrick Bully Sticks (helps scrape tartar and stimulate gums).
That sounds like the plan I've been trying to get Jackson on. I've been starting to brush once a week. The first few times, I hardly got any brushing done. I barely got the brush in his mouth. He prefers to lick all the toothpaste off. But, for the first few times, I wanted to just get him used to the toothbrush. He doesn't like it all but I'm making him deal. He's only 8 months old right now but I need to start. He chews a lot of bones & bully sticks and eats kibble as well. I also just ordered Petzlife spray online.
