Rowdy slept in his crate for the first few months and he would yip when he needed to go out - only once per night. We would go to bed about 11:00 and he would yip to go out at about 2-3am, and then I would get up at about 6:00am. He only needed to go out in the middle of the night for the first month or so, then he started sleeping through the night. He started sleeping with us when he was about 6 months old and he never needs to go out now.
