i think training is best for all involved. a dog could get hurt or even killed if s/he is not trained to come when s/he's called (for example).

the other obvious reason is so company can feel comfortable in your home whether they're a dog-lover or not.

i don't like comparing dogs to kids but people are as impressed w/well mannered pets as they are well-mannered kids.
