I don't think there is any requirement you have a life jacket for your dog. I do have them for mine. My little guy can't figure out waves, bites at them and attacks them. He will stay in the water for a long time, so instead of worrying about him, I keep him in his life jacket (a long time translates to 1/2 hr or so). My little girl loves to chase my lab when he chases sticks. She swims out pretty far to get to him, so I put one on her. Just peace of mind. When we know they are just going to be in the water for a short time, I do not put them in their life jackets. They are in XS and are about 6 lbs.
