Since you were with her downstairs , maybe she could hear all the noises coming from up the stairs. So when you took her up the stairs with you, she was very, very scared and upset. That is why she took off back down the stairs where she felt safe.
I agree with Mike, to keep taking her with you on your vacations. She will become use to the different sounds and smells, and actually be more socialized around people.
