They don't really know why they should get a dog from a good breeder that cost $2000, when they can get elsewhere for $900.
Also, many reputable breeders will not sell them a dog so they have no choice. But because they want one, they are going to get one anyway and that's reality. You, being a knowledgeable reputable breeder are in the unique position of helping guide these people to a better path. Running from it doesn't make these people change, only educating them does. So I encourage you to fight the good fight because not only do these owners need you but their dogs do as well. |
I don't sell mine for $2000. Price is the least of my worries, a good home is the biggest worry. I want to be sure if someone is buying a pup they can provide the right home AND the Vet care. Can they afford the $2000 for a Vet bill if it breaks a leg? A few hundred for a Vet bill if it gets into something and gets ill? How many times have I had a Vet bill for teeth cleaning, illnesses that darn if I know why they got a tummy upset that put them in the Vets and it is always way over $100.
Unfortunately, many buyers we might turn down are not in the right time of their life or situation to buy a Yorkie. I try to tell them why. If they go elsewhere, that's up to them but check out the ads particularly on Kijiji or even here of some for sale being rehomed because the owner can't handle it and the breeder won't take it back.
I will also never sell for breeding and won't start now.
I take mine back ANYTIME in its lifetime. I got one at 14 years of age when the owner died unexpectedly of a heart attack and the husband couldn't cope with the dogs. i only had my little girl for another 5 months, spent $500 on vetting her when I got her home but she had a great 5 months. I helped him find homes for their other two dogs, different breeds.
