I have to disagree with you on this one! My nephew was born three days ago, and the doctor told us that it was only for cosmetic reasons. It would be much like having your tonsils or appendix removed at birth because they *may* get infected.

Circumcision is mutilation. While I would not turn down a mutilated dog, I would not choose to have it done. I also am not going to choose to mutilate my son. Tail docking is very similar- cutting off a part of the body for aesthetic reasons.

I don't really think it's like circumcision because circumcision is definitely for health reasons... it has it's benefits and it's cons, as with nearly anything... but it's a choice the parents have when the babies are born. A lot of people do it/don't do it for religious reasons as well, which is fine. Also, most men would say they are glad they are circumcised. Dogs do not care if their tail is docked or not, lol. It just seems kind of silly.
