It's just one step in a process to finding a good breeder; it's not the only step. Since there aren't any other registries that are stricter, it's all we have; the other registries are totally useless. The AKC does kennel inspections, and does try to rid itself of the worst of breeders, but as long as someone is complying with state laws, there isn't much they can do. That's why it's really important to support state laws regarding breeding and the purchasing of dogs.
