I prefer using larger females in my breeding program. I prefer my females to be in the 6 to 8 lbs range. The yorkie standard says 'not over 7 lbs' as the recommended size. There are many show dogs that become champions that are over 7 lbs and these are produced by very reputable breeders. Being over 7 lbs is just considered a fault, like a bad topline or a bad bite, incorrect tail set, etc. It is very easy to correct size if you have a larger bitch then just breed her to a small male that comes from small lines. It is much easier to breed down than it is to breed up. Of course, ideally, we would all just have yorkies in the 4 to 7 lbs range but believe me, it is not as easy and one would think to consistently have litters within the ideal range. But I am just basing that on my experience and observation. |
