I don't blame you for being paranoid. I have heard too many stories of these little ones being attacked by large dogs that did not have happy endings. I always carry Muzzle (doggie mace) with me when I walk Lady. I will shoot first and ask questions later if a loose dog approaches us.
I had a cat killed by a neighbor's dog in my own backyard years ago. I was on the patio and saw the whole thing. The dog came through the woods in the back and grabbed him, shook him, and that was it. He wasn't even that far away and I ran towards the dog screaming, but it only took a minute for the dog to kill him. |
I witnessed a similar situation and it was awful.

My babysitter-more like grandparents/family who watched me ages 2 months and up had a Siamese cat, Brandy, who was 14 years old. She used to like being outside on the leash with the owners when a German Shepherd attacked her. I will NEVER forget witnessing that and seeing the owner of the dog carrying the dead cat back in her arms and my babysitter just broke down crying. I was really young - maybe 6 years old - and it still sticks out in my mind.
