Wow... I know nothing about air conditioning systems (except that I HAVE to have one and this reminds me that I should be changing our filter more often!!) but this part of your post almost makes me wonder (and I actually had this thought at the beginning of your story) if they didn't fleece you and give you a "refurbished" unit that was already corroded to begin with. Hmmmm....
