All dogs have a pedigree, a family tree. A five generation pedigree just means he has relatives. A well bred Yorkie has lots of champions (in red) in his pedigree.

Checking to make sure a breeder isn't on the USDA "puppymill" list should be one of the first steps when researching a breeder.

You want to get a puppy from a reputable breeder who raises her puppies in the house so they will be well socialized. Reputable breeders never sell to a broker as they truly care about where their puppies go.
We were thinking of getting a second one in the fall after he turns 1 year old. We're DEFINITELY going to make sure we do some serious checking before hand. I found a couple people in my area and one requires that we come to her house for an "interview" and then if we pass we're put on a waiting list. I'm thinking this sounds like a person who REALLY cares where her pups go.
