They are treated like livestock by the millers. They don't waste any money on health testing and provide only the bare minimum care required, often not even that.
All dogs have a pedigree, a family tree. A five generation pedigree just means he has relatives. A well bred Yorkie has lots of champions (in red) in his pedigree.
Checking to make sure a breeder isn't on the USDA "puppymill" list should be one of the first steps when researching a breeder.
You want to get a puppy from a reputable breeder who raises her puppies in the house so they will be well socialized. Reputable breeders never sell to a broker as they truly care about where their puppies go. |
We were thinking of getting a second one in the fall after he turns 1 year old. We're DEFINITELY going to make sure we do some serious checking before hand. I found a couple people in my area and one requires that we come to her house for an "interview" and then if we pass we're put on a waiting list. I'm thinking this sounds like a person who REALLY cares where her pups go.
