Unfortunately, even dogs who don't have liver disease can be carriers. Dr. Sharon Center of Cornell is currently working with a grant from the AKC to find a genetic marker. Until then, breeders must be diligent about bile acid testing all the parents prior to breeding and pulling any dog who produces a shunt puppy from their breeding program. Dr. Center also recommends that all Yorkie puppies have a bile acids test once they have reached 20 weeks.
