Bully sticks are, indeed, bull penises. And apparently quite delicious, if Penny's opinion is any indicator.
I let her have bully sticks often, and she also gets small beefhide dental chews sometimes. I think it is most important to know your own dog and their chewing style. Penny works on the beefhide chews for hours-- she's more of a licker/slow and deliberate chewer. I never give her the hide chews unless I am able to watch her chew it, and I'm sure that whatever individual pieces she swallows are quite tiny. She's also BIG for a yorkie (13lber!). I might be less secure giving the hide treats to a smaller dog, and I would never, ever give hide chews to a dog that tends to gulp down big pieces of things, since that is when an obstruction would be most likely to happen.
