Personaly: I would go back and just say that you bought it from the guy on the title...If they ask why it was signed so long ago? It was being worked on by "Dad" to get it running.
I hate to be dishonest, but if you go thru the "long" route, you may end up with a salvage title. Then the resale when/if your daughter wants to sell, will be next to nothing.
