This may be way out there for you, but I like R.A. Salvatore. He writes mostly fantasy books (think Lord of the Rings type books, you know, elves, magic). The best books by him that I liked were the Highwayman, and the Dark Elf Trilogy. Be careful picking out a book by him though since he writes in Trilogies mostly, so make sure you are getting the first book in the story.
