Milo got nicked at the groomers on his belly, we went to the vet and they did not give stiches because of the placement of the cut. What they did do is give us antibiotics and a powder to put on it. I kept insisting he way not licking it, but the vet suggested putting a onsie or t shirt on him. Not more than 12 hours later it looked much better. Try not to feel bad, my Vet told me that the belly is the most common place for this to happen. My groomer called me crying when this happened to let me know and when I asked the Vet if I brought him in right away or if the groomer did would it have made a difference and she said no. So, it happens to the best I know you feel , but remember it is very hard to trim a moving target.
