Most of all the breeders I know do get their money up front. However, if a litter is not produced (1 live pup is considered a litter) and per the contract a repeat breeding is given with no extra cost. But, the money is kept by the stud owner. The reason behind this is the dam could be barren. Now that being said, usually with a first time stud, you don't charge a stud fee, after all he hasn't been proven.
