Yes, people can be rude! I have found that when people ask me how much I paid for my babies and I am not comfortable telling them right away. I say, " why do you ask"? It always throws them off and they will tell me what's on their mind. I then answer according to how involved I want to get with them.
For some people it's just none of their business!
Your baby is beautiful and worth what you paid...consider it an investment.
