No vet should ever tell you that anything you want to do for the safety of your dogs is ridiculous.

Anyway, the only shot that the vet has to give is rabies. They could do that one on the day of the exam and have a tech give DHPP two weeks later without a vet appt. and you'd just pay for the vaccine itself.
I give my babies their shots myself. I just do it early in the day, so if there is ever a problem, I can get them to the vet. There has never been a problem. We don't have an emergency vet clinic, my vet does have an emergency number to call, but luckily I've never had to use it yet. I take them to the vet yearly for an exam and to get their rabies vaccine.
