I agree, it's not sleeping in the middle that makes them feel dominant, it's sleeping at the highest point of the bed. The alpha dog sleeps at the highest point and has to keep an eye out for all intruders; that's got to be a stressful job! So if a dog wants to sleep above you, I would discourage that, otherwise enjoy.
