I recommend the shave down. Its so much easier for the dog and the tech/vet taking care of them. the hair is not dropping on the incision and its easier to keep away from the incision so its not sticking to it right after surgery. also its easier to keep them clean since you will not be able to bath Ranger for at least 3-4 weeks (i recommend waiting long to prevent slippage in the tub or any other accidents, which happen quite often). with the short coat you do not have to annoying them with brushings and preening during the sensitive time after surgery.

plus you can buy some more clothes for him! just be careful about buying ones with pant legs. make sure they are easy to get on and off without bending him legs too much as he won't be able to do it after surgery.
