I feel that the mommas definitely need extra calcium after whelping. I give mine 1/2 a calcium pill twice a day. Often it is necessary to hand feed the mommas after they have pups. They need plenty of food and water so they can produce milk.

The heating pad should only cover 1/2 the whelping box so the momma and the puppies can get off of it if they get to hot. If the pups get too hot they can get dehydrated. I use a heating pad that keeps the temperature at 100 degrees.
