There is a difference between shy and poor health. If he livened up with his parents and was more reserved with his siblings, then it probably is as the breeder said, he was forced into the background by the more exuberant siblings. As long as he respond to you ( which he did with the belly rubs and licking your finger) and he does not appear sick, I think he will come into his own when not around the other siblings. Also as another post stated, if you have another pet, keep in mind the personality differences. But to me he sounds like a keeper! Let us know how it works out.
