AKC does have DNA testing available, but it will only determine or rule out parentage. AKC registration is only a small point when it comes to choosing to breed or not. Unfortunately, science has not as yet given us the tools to determine which problematic genes may be carrying traits that breeders would like to eliminate. Therefore, it requires an enormous amount of research into the health backgrounds of each breeding dog we use to try to eliminate the problems that may be carried by our 'healthy' breeding dogs. We look back at parents, siblings, grandparents, great-grandparents etc... as far back as possible on both sides to try to make sure we are not bringing forward any of the myriad problems with health. A good breeder should be familiar with genetics and all the possible health problems common to the breed. Do you know about portosystemic shunt, luxating patellas, collapsing tracheas, Legg-calve perthes, heart murmurs, open fontanels...just to scratch the surface?
You say you just want another puppy, what is your responsibility to any other pups produced from the mating? Or any pups they produce if allowed to be bred by whoever gets them, and so on and so on. They will be on the planet because of a choice you made.
food for thought.
