Default Changing to Adult Food - WHEN??

I have a question for all of you ... my vet today told me that I should change my puppy, who will be 7 months old in a week, from puppy food to adult food right after he's neutered. I always thought you make the change at 12 months but she said it should be after he's neutered which will be only 7 months since they tend to gain weight after neutering.

My question is, I am about to run out of his puppy food. Do you think I should just start changing him into adult food (though his surgery isn't for another week and a half)? This way I don't have to get a whole new 6 pound bag and use only 1/7th of it then have to switch foods. Or should I just go ahead and buy a new bag of puppy food - use it up (he'll be 10 months - 3 months after surgery - by the time I use it up) and then switch to adult food at 10 months???

Please advise!!!!
